Tuesday I went with a Dell rep to do a favor for another army unit in
the area. We were installing servers into a rack. the work was fun,
and a nice change from the normal growing of roots into my chair. They
had a serious lack of tools, so I put my Leatherman ('Wave' model) to
good use, and so did the dell rep once i got my hands on a real
screwdriver. He mostly used it for opening up boxes and packing bags.
When everything was installed and it came time to leave, the
leatherman was nowhere to be found. we thought it might have fallen
into one of the boxes which had been carried off, but those were
searched as well. we could't prove anything, but the dell rep said he
noticed one guy eyeing it up. we talked to the Major in charge, and he
said he'd look into it or replace it.
the next morning, we had to go back to check some things and see if it
had turned up. usually in these sort of situations, the leadership
will make the offer of 'if it shows up on my desk, no questions will
be asked' before any real investigating gets done. In this case, it
did. He said he talked to his troops, told them what a fucked up thing
it was to steal a tool from the guys who are doing them a huge favor.
It showed up on his desk, and he gave it back to me.
If I had never seen it again, life would have gone on. It was an
issued item, not one that i had paid for, so the loss wasn't too
great. I feel sorry for my neighbors, who left their fridge outside to
defrost and it walked away.. (is your refridgerator running?...) It
sucks that someone took it, but at the same time, a fridge is like
gold bullion around here, and leaving it unguarded is just foolish.

I've had this idea for a long time, now. I'm sure it's already been
done, but I wanted to do it too. I am calling it 'Moments' and it is
basically moving photographs. I see them everywhere. A classic
example is a child blowing bubbles, but instead of being frozen in
time, you present a breif clip. you see the child start to blow, the
bubble forms, and finally seals itself and starts to float. The
biggest challenge is capturing the moment. This, my first, is an easy
one. It's constantly happening, impossible to miss. the example given
above may require an almost precognitive sense of what's coming. Or
just recording everything...
I've been carrying my camcorder in my pocket, and while there haven't
been many opportunities, I keep my eyes open. I've been eying this
drip for some time now, and finally took the 2 minutes to do it this
evening. I hope to add more Moments to my collection, but it will be
challenging. Too much is left to chance and not being prepared.
I live for the day that we can record a feed directly from the optic
nerves or straight from the mind.
After some thinking, it's likely that most clips will be best
appreciated with some level of time expansion/slo-mo, so maybe a
better name for this would be 'slo-moments'

Not sure if I could do it, but i'll bet Sarai would love me to try...

not much is going on at the moment. hung out with some of the guys
friday night, did some impromptu sight-seeing yesterday while heading
to a job, this morning is super quiet, so I played some Daiblo 2.
(which has suddenly become quite popular with the announcement of
Diablo 3 a week or so ago.)
I went to write this, and found myself tossing asside my usual
formatting settup. The Vox editor doesn't have the same options, and
the HTML customization is lacking... so now there's no point including
any custom CSS or anything else. And most of the time i'll be posting
by email, so I can't add tags at the time of posting.
My wireless mouse (Logitech Nano VX) just told me it's batteries are
critical. I'm pretty pleased with that, considering I've been using
this same pair of AAA's since I got it over two months ago. I've still
got two sets of AAA's, which should easily last until I get home.

I was up late again last night. While I was waiting for Sarai to get
back and get online, I started fooling around with my virtual linux
server. I decided it was time to get PHP installed and running, and
you can guess what happened. 12:45 AM is when I finally got it working
properly, and gave up waiting for Sarai.
I also got our fridge yesterday. It was part of a package deal I got
from a guy who is leaving. $200 for the fridge, 19 inch LCD TV with
built-in dvd player, 8 port cable/dsl router, and a bunch of other
miscellaneous stuff like power strips, inverters, and adapters. Also
some stackable storage drawers. Having the drawers allowed me to setup
a make-shift desk, so now I have a lot more room for my laptop and
stuff. I let my roommate use the TV, since his TV was small and his
dvd player is jacked-up. It's still mine, but I wouldn't be using it
much anyways. All I need to do now is get the desk top a little
higher, so my knees will fit under it.
*Time passes*
Just got back from about 45 minutes on the baclony smoking cigars with
some dudes.
Earlier this morning I was poking around with the virtual server a bit
more, and setup a basic page that verifies my PHP and MYSql services
are working porperly. There's still a million things I don't know
about either of those systems, but it's a start.

not much going on around here. been playing with the new camcorder a
bit, recorded some clips today and emailed them to lover. :) I haven't
eaten a single proper meal today, just junk food. Yes, I'm hungry.
finally got a haircut today, which was way way way overdue. the
barbers they have are great, and do an excellent job of not leaving
clippings behind. don't know how they do it, but i like it. it would
be nice if they head the head and neck massage like the guys in UAE
did, but for $3 they do an excellent job. it was $9 in South Korea...
on to the topic on everyone's mind.. EFX. it's straight up busted atm.
it's nothing the CL's can fix. if they could, they would. I've been
helping them out a bit, but there's nothing we can do with teh tools
and access levels available to us. right now the only ones who can fix
this (to my knowledge) is Keith or Martin, and Martin is a 'maybe'. we
are at Keith's mercy, and he's nowhere to be found.
in the meantime, the forums are still
working, and I'll be updating them with any news regarding the site.
There's a thread for sharing your temporary or permanent new blogs,
and also information on the (still kicking, faint pulse) IRC channel,
so we can all keep in touch if you need to ask technical questions, it
would be preferred that you ask in the forums, and leave the site's
shoutbox for less serious matters.
personnaly, I'd hate to see EFX go the way of modblog. yes, i
mentioned it. many of us remember it. many of us miss it. -Out.

Saw this headline on Reddit.com : "...Now that gay marriage is legal,

Also, it seems some people are taking offense to the portrayal of the human race

people are? (also, the reddit comments
are FTW)
